Presentation Abstract:
On September 2024, Division 35, Section V offered a virtual session on Asian American international mothers and their journeys. The event received numerous positive and warm feedback, highlighting the value of such discussions within the community. This proposal aims to create a similar, in-person opportunity during the APA 2025 conference to continue the conversation, expand awareness, and build allyship.Â
This session aims to increase awareness, facilitate conversation, and highlight the multifaceted experiences of Asian American international/cross-cultural mothers through the lens of diverse, global, and feminist perspectives. Drawing from research reviews, professional insights, and personal narratives, the panel speakers will lead interactive discussions to illuminate the challenges and enriching aspects of motherhood. Key topics that will be covered, include:Â
Navigating intersectional identities while parenting
Negotiating roles within the familyÂ
Language barriers
Cross-cultural and multicultural similarities and differencesÂ
Intergenerational differences and conflictsÂ
Strategies to overcome challenges and self-care
Empowerment and allyship through community support, research, and trainingÂ
By amplifying the voices of Asian American international/cross-cultural mothers, this session seeks to broaden the understanding of how race, ethnicity, culture, and gender intersect in the lived realities of this often underrepresented group. This presentation aims to contribute to broader conversations on identity, cultural preservation, and the importance of culturally responsive support systems for Asian American families.
